Pat Metheny was born in Kansas City on August 12, 1954 into a musical family. Starting on trumpet at the age of 8, Metheny switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age. Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, metheny displayed his trademark playing style, blending bebop, folk, and Brazilian influences with a “horn-like” phrasing on the guitar. a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues. With the release of his first album, Bright Size Life (1975), he reinvented the traditional “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of players. Within a short period he was ECM’s top artist and one of the most popular of all jazzmen, selling out stadiums. In addition to recording for ECM, he has appeared as a leader on the Geffen, Warner Bros., and Nonesuch labels. Metheny mostly avoided playing predictable music, and his freelance projects were always quite interesting. Metheny further explored fringes of the avant-garde on his 1994 recording Zero Tolerance for Silence which baffled his audience, however, he retained his popularity as a consistently creative performer. Metheny has remained active in the 21st century, releasing Speaking of Now in 2002, the acoustic solo album One Quiet Night in 2003, Way Up in 2005, and Metheny Mehldau in 2006. Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau returned to the studio the following year for Quartet. Metheny released the trio album Day Trip in 2008. Orchestrion, which featured a solo Metheny playing several acoustic instruments designed and built for him by Eric Singer. early in 2010. Metheny released What’s It All About in June of 2011, his second solo acoustic guitar recording. Unlike any other entry in his large catalog, the set was comprised entirely of covers of pop songs by contemporary songwriters. Metheny released Unity Band with saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and bassist Ben Williams in June of 2012. Recent solo-billed recordings include From This Place (Nonesuch, 2020), recorded with a variety of guest artists, and the all-guitar collaboration Road to the Sun (Modern Recordings, 2021).

But for legions of his fans worldwide, there is no setting that defines Metheny the musician more than his role as bandleader of one of the most acclaimed and influential musical ensembles of the past quarter century, the Pat Metheny Group. the Group has occupied a musical territory that is accessible to listeners of all kinds while never compromising a unique compositional and improvisational integrity that is unparalleled among contemporary and mainstream jazz groups. with co-founder keyboardist Lyle Mays, the group became a cornerstone of contemporary jazz, winning seven consecutive Grammys for seven consecutive releases. In addition to a core quartet, the group was often joined by a variety of other multi-instrumentalists expanding the size to between five and eight musicians. Over the course of 40 years as a recording artist, Metheny has participated in just about every avenue of modern music making that the early 21st century might offer a musician. Seemingly bent on blurring and obliterating stylistic boundaries at every opportunity, he has created an expansively impressive body of work that includes a series of highly influential trio recordings, award winning solo albums, scores for hit Hollywood motion pictures, duets with major artists such as Charlie Haden and Jim Hall, and collaborations with other significant figures in modern music like Ornette Coleman, Steve Reich, Brad Mehldau and many others. metheny is often praised for his amazing melodic sense with so much melody in the midst of complex lines and changes. Everything about his music comes back to Melody, the bass lines, and the chord movement. This tends to make the music superbly accessible.
